Description
Stonea Camp March is the lowest 'hill' fort in Britain.  Built in the Iron Age (500BC to 43AD) on a low gravel island, it was fortified with banks and ditches.  It has been suggested that Stonea Camp saw conflict between the Iceni and the Romans in 44AD, and human bones showing clear evidence of sword marks were found in one ditch during excavations.

Today you can see remains of the defensive banks and ditches which show two distinct phases, one outer larger enclosure and an inner D-shaped area.

Stonea Camp is now a scheduled ancient monument whose banks and ditches were restored after excavations in 1991.  The site is also an increasingly important habitat for wildlife.

You can find the Camp at Grid Ref: Sheet 143. 446930.
