Description
Saffron Walden Museum includes a collection of archaeology and early histroy of the area, through to displays of decorative arts, costume and toys.  Look out for the castle ruins in the museum grounds.

Saffron Walden Museum opened in 1835 and contains much to "stand awhile and admire". It stands in an enclosed grass meadow, suitable for picnics, with the ruins of the 12th century Walden Castle in the grounds

The Human History Collections covers local social history, archaeology, egyptian and eastern mediterranean antiquities, cultures from around the workd and decorative arts.

The natural history collections contain about 70,000 specimens of plants, animals, rocks, minerals and fossils. The founders of the museum and other 19th century naturalists presented most of these specimens. Material was collected from Europe and all over the world. The early documentation for the collections is particularly interesting and includes detailed catalogues, and field notebooks about birds and wild flowers.

The Saffron Walden Museum also runs a full programme of events throughout the year.
