Description
Rockingham Forest is an area of some 200 square miles in North-East Northamptonshire, lying between the Rivers Welland and Nene and the towns of Stamford and Kettering. It has a rich and varied landscape, with farmland, open pasture, pockets of woodland and villages built from local stone.

Rockingham Forest has been inhabited since the Iron Age and since that time there has been a general progression of woodland clearance and conversion to arable and pastoral land. It was following the Norman Conquest that the area was designated a royal hunting ground for William the Conqueror and was given the title of Rockingham forest.

Rockingham Forest has its own areas of interest for you to visit.  There is Southey Wood,  Wakerley Great Wood, Bedford Purleius Natural Nature Reserve, Fineshade Wood, Fermyn Woods.  Each wood has a different environment and attracts its own wildlife.

Originally a medieval hunting ground, Rockingham Forest has plenty of routes for walking, cycling, horse riding and running or jogging.   Take a trip to one of the visitor centres and you will find details of the nature trails, orienteering and wildlife activities.

Rockingham Castle is located on the edge of the forest and you can combine your trip to the forest with a trip to the Castle.   Look out for Rockingham Castle's special events.

There are also running and walking clubs that regularly use the forest for their sport.
