Newmarket
Not actually in the county but we thought it warranted a mention. Newmarket is world renown for its horse racing and dates back to 1174. The town has many Studs and Stables as well as Tattersalls, the famous bloodstock auctioneers. The town is also home to the National Horse Racing Museum and the town has special horse routes so the horses can reach the gallops safely. 'The gallops' is a hill overlooking the town and used as a training run to improve the horses' workload when training. They are also home to birds and animals specifically suited to the chalky terrain and recent excavations have revealed some examples of 6th century living. Most of the Newmarket-based racing stables are situated in the centre of the town, where they can easily access the gallops. Outside the town the land-use is dominated by thorough-bred breeding.
The town has two race courses situated on Newmarket Heath, the Rowley Mile and the July Course; the two courses being separated by the Devil's Dyke.
