Description
Mountfitchet Castle is believed to originate from an early Iron Age fort and Roman, Saxon and Viking settlement.  Artefacts found on the site from these periods support this belief. 

During its occupation it was fought over many times and had numerous owners.  Until the final attack on the Castle around 1215 by King John, when the stones were taken by the villagers to build their houses and Mountfitchet Castle site lay overgrown and forgotten for over 700 years until its re-construction today. 

Over the past few years, many items have been discovered in Mountfitchet Castle grounds, mainly due to the long hot summers.  In 2003, a very rare Medieval dagger was found in the herb garden, which is located in the inner bailey. 

Prior to the Saxon (and later Norman) occupation, the hill top location was a Roman hill fort.  A hoard of Roman coins and various pieces of Roman pottery (including high status red Samian ware) have also been found within the Castle grounds.

There are also numerous animals within Mountfitchet Castle grounds, goats, sheep, deer and chickens to name a few.
