March

March once occupied the second largest island in the great level of Fens, being situated on the path of the Roman Road and the Fen Causeway.  Before the drainage of the Fens, the town formed two settlments, Merche and Mercheford, and probably owes its orgins to the ford where the road between Ely and Wisbech crossed the river.

The River Nene runs through the town and its banks are edged with pretty cottages and buildings as well as parks and open fields; providing many attractive riverside walks.   Just outside the town is Dunhams Wood, which is 4 acres of woodlands with sculptures and a miniature railway.

There are a number of local attractions in and around the town.  The March and District Museum tells the history of the town and its people and the world famous St Wendreda's church, named after St Wendreda the Town's saint and unique to March, is notable for its magnificent double-hammer beam roof and flying angels.

The town also hosts a fair on the first monday before whit sunday and the third tuesday in October.
