Description
Bury St Edmunds' has a strong religous history due mainly to its association with the murdered christian martyr king of East Anglia, St Edmund.  After his death it become a main stopping point for pilgrims in medieval England and the Abbey itself had direct links with Rome.  At the height of its popularity was home to approximately 100 monks and a similar number of servants.

A fire in 1465 destroyed much of the Abbey and its treasures.

Today the reamins of the Abbey stand in the heart of Bury St Edmunds in the Abbey Gardens with its glorious floral displays (in season) and adjacent to St Edmundsbury Cathedral.  A lovely place to go walking.
